Subject: URGENT: Constituent Opposition to ACA 7 - Protect Equality and Meritocracy
Dear Senator [Senator's Last Name],My name is [Your Name], and I am a constituent residing in your district [Your District Number]. Inspired by Attorney Long David Liu, I am writing to strongly urge you to VOTE NO on Assembly Constitutional Amendment 7 (ACA 7).
While the stated intent of ACA 7 is to address disparities, I believe this proposal is a regressive step that undermines the fundamental principle of equality enshrined in the California Constitution. Specifically, ACA 7 seeks to bypass Proposition 209, which the voters of California have twice upheld to ensure that the state does not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
As a resident who values the American Dream and the spirit of hard work, I am deeply concerned that ACA 7 would:
1.Institutionalize Racial Preferences: By allowing state agencies to bypass non-discrimination laws for certain programs, the government is essentially picking winners and losers based on skin color rather than individual merit.
2.Harm Minority Communities: For many in the Asian American community and beyond, the promise of California is built on a "merit-first" system. ACA 7 threatens to create new forms of exclusion in public education, employment, and contracting.
3.Disregard Voter Will: Californians have made it clear that they want a color-blind government. Attempting to circumvent Proposition 209 through ACA 7 is a dismissal of the democratic mandate provided by the taxpayers.
I believe we should focus on improving K-12 education and providing equal opportunities for all residents to compete, rather than lowering standards or introducing racial quotas.
The people of California deserve a system where success is determined by character and effort, not by ethnic background. I ask you to stand for true equality
and reject ACA 7.
I look forward to hearing your position on this critical matter.
Sincerely,
